This approach emphasizes the importance of hands-on, experiential learning and encourages children to explore, tinker, and discover for themselves. A Reggio-inspired tinker box is filled with various materials and tools that children can use to explore and create. The box's contents might include craft supplies, beads, buttons, scissors, paper, tape, and more. The purpose of the tinker box is to allow children to use their creativity and problem-solving skills to create and explore on their own. It is a way to encourage open-ended, imaginative play and promote learning through hands-on exploration and discovery.

In addition, some Tinker boxes are tech-enhanced or STEM educational kits that contain materials and instructions for children to engage in hands-on, creative problem-solving activities. They are designed to encourage children to explore and experiment with different materials and concepts and to think critically and creatively. Some examples of STEAM tinker boxes include:

LittleBits: LittleBits is a company that makes electronic tinker boxes for children. Their kits contain various electronic components that can be snapped together to create various projects, from simple circuits to more complex devices.

K'NEX: K'NEX is a company that makes tinker boxes focusing on engineering and construction. Their kits contain various interlocking plastic parts and other materials that can be used to build structures, machines, and other creations.

You can come to play with both in our MakerSpace! Register here

Here are three examples for you to get started!

A tinker box filled with recycled materials such as cardboard tubes, bottle caps, and egg cartons, which children can use to build and create their own structures and designs.

A tinker box contains various loose parts, such as beads, buttons, and popsicle sticks, which children can use to create patterns, designs, and structures.

A tinker box with natural materials such as pinecones, acorns, and rocks, which children can use to create nature-inspired art projects or engage in sensory exploration.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3476113706987563721.post-63699653927903210002023-01-05T09:57:00.002-05:002023-01-05T09:57:57.801-05:00Get out of the classroom with virtual tours
Virtual field trips are an exciting way for middle school students to experience new places and concepts without ever leaving the classroom. Using technology, students can visit locations and learn about subjects in a interactive and engaging way.

One great example of a virtual field trip is the American Museum of Natural History's Hall of North American Mammals (Grades 3-5)

You can do a virtual hall tour with a student worksheet that is designed to span about one class period, or you can assign additional activities to extend the exploration over two or more class periods. Their tour allows students to explore habitat dioramas to learn how animals must be adapted to an environment in order to survive in it.

Another excellent virtual field trip is the "Virtual Youth Docent Tours" tour offered by the National Air and Space Museum. Each interactive Virtual Youth Docent Tour presentation for 3rd - 5th grades lasts approximately 45 minutes and will be hosted on Zoom.

Links:

American Museum of Natural History's "Hall of North American Mammals"

National Air and Space Museum's "Virtual Youth Docent Tours"
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3476113706987563721.post-37725808084992873752023-01-03T12:22:00.007-05:002023-01-03T12:23:15.640-05:00Valentine's Day STEM Challenges

STEM challenges are important in the classroom because they help students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity skills. These skills are essential for success in the 21st century and will serve students well throughout their lives.

One way to make STEM challenges even more fun and engaging is to pair them with a holiday such as Valentine's Day. This can help shake off the winter doldrums and add an element of fun and excitement to the activity. For example, you might have students design and build a structure using candy hearts or create Valentine's Day-themed robots using recycled materials.

There are many ways to incorporate STEM challenges into the classroom, and they can be tailored to fit the interests and abilities of your students. Whether you're using them to teach specific concepts or just looking for a fun and engaging activity, STEM challenges are a great way to get kids excited about learning. Plus, they're a lot of fun! So don't be afraid to shake things up and try something new this Valentine's Day. Your students will thank you. They allow students to have a say in their learning and can be used in a variety of subjects and settings.

What is a choice board?

A choice board is a visual representation of a set of options that students can choose from to complete a task or activity. It can be used in place of a traditional worksheet or assignment, giving students the opportunity to select their own learning path.

Choice boards can be created in a variety of formats, including physical boards with cut-out choices, or digital versions using tools like Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint.

Benefits of using choice boards in middle school

Choice boards can be especially beneficial for middle school students, as they are at a stage where they are developing their own interests and preferences. Allowing them to choose their own learning activities can increase motivation and engagement.

Choice boards can also support differentiation in the classroom. Teachers can create a range of options that cater to different learning styles, abilities, and interests, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to learn in a way that is meaningful to them.

Here are some tips for using choice boards in middle school:

Plan ahead: Before introducing a choice board, it's important to have a clear learning goal in mind. This will help you create a range of options that align with the objectives of the lesson.

Offer a variety of options: Make sure to include a range of options, including activities that are more challenging and those that are more accessible. This will allow students to select a choice that is appropriate for their skill level.

Provide clear instructions: Make sure to clearly outline the expectations and requirements for each option on the choice board. This will help students understand what is expected of them and ensure that they are meeting the learning objectives.

Allow for flexibility: While it's important to have a plan, it's also important to be open to adapting and adjusting the choice board as needed. For example, if a student is struggling with a particular option, you may need to provide additional support or offer an alternative.

Choice boards can be a useful tool for middle school teachers looking to engage and motivate their students. By offering a range of options and allowing students to choose their own learning path, teachers can support differentiation and create a more personalized learning experience.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3476113706987563721.post-32539080455823532392022-03-22T10:37:00.005-04:002022-03-22T10:44:32.921-04:00Students Making a Difference on World Water Day
On World Water Day, it is essential to recognize young people's role in making a positive difference. Students are becoming more aware of their own water footprint and what they need for sustainability; we should empower them with knowledge about how much effort goes into providing clean drinking water around the world each day and ways they could help make an impact! These Third-grade students created their own PSA for the Global Goals Project on Goal Six, "Clean Water and Sanitation." You can watch their video at this link.

These students operate on the fundamental principle that all people have access to clean water and proper sanitation regardless of economic status or location. While working on this project, they discovered that the only way we can achieve this goal is by working together as one human family, and achieving the sustainable management of fresh drinking-water supplies requires collaboration at both the domestic level (between families) but also international levels where stakeholders need representatives who can hold discussions about how best practices might be developed across regions, so no country falls victim to disease. Here are some things you can do! https://www.globalgoals.org/goals/6-clean-water-and-sanitation/#things-to-do

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3476113706987563721.post-54181200573029409992022-03-03T09:07:00.007-05:002022-03-03T17:13:22.825-05:00Resources for Observance of World Wildlife Day
In honor of World Wildlife Day, we would like to share some resources with educators on how to help students learn about and appreciate wildlife.

The UN celebrates World Wildlife Day on March 3, marking the day they signed an important Convention to protect endangered species.

The theme for 2022 is 'Recovering key species of flora and fauna in our ecosystem. This tour is excellent for students as they learn about the history of the arrivals and see where many of our families came through when making their way to America from other countries. Each screen offers information and history on each page, with primary source images and files from immigrants, as well as videos to watch and mesh models of architectural features to examine. We suggest you explore the toolbar, which offers thumbnail views and site fly-throughs of the entire complex. No matter where you click, there is historical information on the right-hand side. When you are done with one "slide" you click "next" and it brings you to more information and media including data about the immigrants.

These tiles have been proven to provide concrete models that can help students develop concepts related to integers, algebraic expressions, equations, and polynomials.

For students new to solving equations, solving for x is abstract. In elementary school, we use number lines to understand integers. Similarly, algebra tiles make solving equations, combining like terms, or factoring polynomials a visual and more kinesthetic process. Cesar, Alejandro, Maynor explored that topic and the Sustainable Development Goal #7 (Affordable and Clean Energy). @AshleyShunk393 was one of many teachers who took their science fairs online! The main goal of a virtual science fair is to give students a way to showcase and share their science projects in an approach that adds more audience to the experience and extends the communication about their work. Take a moment and learn how to host a Virtual Science Fair in Wakelet. Students do not need accounts, you can create your own collection and invite students to be contributors. They can embed their own text and screen recorded videos from Flipgrid and links to their work. @techieteacherZA<span face="TwitterChirp, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, "Segoe UI", Roboto, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; The focus of this site is on forming a global community and exhibiting tolerance and respect for diverse cultures, languages, and ideas. Easy for students to use, they click on the book list, and a huge list of books are available with descriptions.
Books are sorted by language, color, shape, format, genre character, and true vs. make-believe. You can even password protect your maps to keep them private for your own classroom. Just enter the website, create a name for your map and start dropping markers, It is seriously easy. In the beginning, we were teaching the basics, not many schools had embraced the Googlesphere, and there was much catching up to do for those just adding Google Apps for the first time. Over the years, we have watched our teachers wholeheartedly take up the tools, connect their classrooms then turn to us for guidance on using G-suite efficiently and in line with the best pedagogical practices. In turn, they became some of our best presenters! With 16 recent titles and Dr. Michael Salvatore, Long Branch Superintendent of Schools, as our keynote speaker this year, teachers are sure to find sessions that will galvanize their classrooms to the next level of technology integration. We look forward to welcoming back our past participants and our new attendees. Register here!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3476113706987563721.post-91689772189417492312019-01-28T10:33:00.001-05:002019-01-29T12:42:30.156-05:00Newsletter-JanuaryCheck out all the upcoming workshops, programs, and conferences we have! Another problem encountered during 3D flower making is burnt
fingers from the glue gun. We have seen these on Amazon, if anyone knows of a
less expensive hack, let us know,
we will post it!
